Over R100 million distributed to the community

History

The South Africa Jewish community has diminishing in terms of numbers over the years, yet it is often touted as being of the finest in terms of quality in the world.

Over the past 25 years, the combination of an ageing Jewish population, rampant immigration and significant increases in the cost of living, have contributed to an increasingly poorer population. This trend is showing no signs of letting up, painting a grim picture of Jewish financial sustainability over the short to medium term.

Against this backdrop, Foundation 2000 was set up in the year 2000 in order to provide a capital fund for the Jewish Community.

It was the first capital fund in Johannesburg. The long-term goal is to raise a capital fund of R200m.

A special mention of gratitude is made to our former CEO Mr Gerald Leissner, who passed away after 15 years of dedication to the Foundation and the community.

Foundation 2000 would like to thank its donors, CEO and trustees for all their help.

Some of our success

The fund raised an initial R50 million in the first 12 months and has to date distributed over R100 million to the community at zero costs (other than minimal accounting & audit fees).

The fund has assisted in many transformational projects within the community. Some projects include:

Rationalisation of welfare
Negotiated the transaction and financing of the Chevrah Kadisha in taking over Sandringham Gardens and later Our Parents home and the Selwyn Segal. This transformed the Chev from a burial society into the powerhouse of Johannesburg welfare that it is today. This rationalisation of welfare and elimination of duplication and wasted costs by the excellent management of the Chev saves the community tens of millions of rands year while providing an incredible service to the community.
Community Security
Foundation 2000 provided the initial funding for the Chief Rabbi's CAP security programme. Crime was extremely high, and many members of the community were immigrating. CAP has transformed the safety and security of many of Johannesburg's suburbs which enables our community to live more safely.
Computerisation of Schools
Foundation 2000 provided new computer systems to the majority of schools in Johannesburg
Schools infrastructure programs
Foundation 2000 has assisted with the funding of many school building initiatives
Emergency Security Relief
In 2014 there was a security threat to the community at Rosh Hashanah time. Foundation 2000, at short notice, provided significant funds to secure the schools, shul, and community organisations with concrete ballasts, security equipment and extra personnel for the required period of time.
Foundation 2000 funded many other projects in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban
